2024 Fly Fishing Season Prep

The fishing season is upon us again, the trees and shrubs are starting to flower, the days are a little bit longer, and the lambs will soon be bouncing around the fields. This is a sign for the fishermen and women to get the rods, reels and gear dusted down for another season. There are lots of things that can be done in preparation for the new season.

Organise

Organising your fishing gear before the start of your fishing season can save a lot of time and hassle, so here are most of the essentials we here at Procastangling try and have with me when we go fishing:

- Polarized sunglasses

- Rubber mesh net (even better if it floats for easy catch and release)

- Tapered leaders

- A range of tippet (fluorocarbon and monofilament)

- Assorted fly boxes (dry, nymph and streamer)

- Strike indicators

- Fly floatant

- Forceps

- A fly dry patch 

- Waders

Extra essentials

- Monomaster – something that every angler should own (see details below)

- Nail knot tool

- Leatherman or knife

- Lightweight waterproof jacket 

- A flask for that hot beverage

- And a fishing bag to put most of the above in – make sure you leave room for snacks!
